Sarah Palin & Alaskan Independence Party

Ever since I heard that Todd Palin was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, I have been interested in this "we don't want to be part of the United States anymore" group of people in Alaska. There is no doubt, it has been documented that Todd Palin was a member until as recent as 2002, and Sarah palin has hosted events and even recorded videos encouraging the Alaskan Independence Party to "keep up the good work."

Here is a video from this year (2008) that Sarah Palin made for the Alaskan Independence party, you see in Alaska, this group is sort of like the old Southerners who still want the South to secede from the Union. The AIP is no different, they have only one thing in their sights and thats a statewide vote for secession of Alaska from the United States. Don't believe me?

From the wikipedia:

The Alaskan Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of Alaska that advocates a state vote which includes several options, including increased state autonomy, territorial status, becoming a separate nation or commonwealth state, and, failing that, for increased Alaskan control of Alaskan land, gun rights, privatization, home schooling, and reduction of governmental intrusion in the private lives of its citizens with adherence to the founding documents of the United States. The party has appeared on the ballot in Alaska in all state elections since 1970.

Not only does this party want to become its own nation, this party has actually been on every single ballot in Alaska since 1970, so this is not just some small group of people. In Alaska this is a hot topic, and there is statewide support for this idea of Alaska being its own country!

This really has me thinking about Sarah Palin and her loyalty to the United States of America. She loves to boast about how much she loves "America" but being so involved with a party that wants to secede her state from the U.S. is somewhat contradictory, doncha think?

What would Americans think if George Bush was making video clips directly for some Confederate Party down South that wanted to secede states from the Union? I am surprised that Sarah Palin and her recent promotion for the Alaskan Independence Party has been left out of the campaign this year. These are not old connections, or old videos, the video above is from 2008, the year of her election campaign, it's no doubt there are still ties.

One does not change their opinion on things like this suddenly, if Palin was not associated with them in some way she would not be making videos for them. Her husband was a member for years, and no one denies this.

The question is, how can people who believe they want Alaska to secede from the U.S. help benefit our country if their very nature is to begin dismantling it? Let it be known, the AIP is not going away, they are the state's third largest voter group, and continue to push for a statewide vote on secession of Alaska. The AIP has been on every ballot since 1970, and with its popularity growing, perhaps one day they may succeed.

To be honest with you, this entire thing really got me thinking about how far Alaska is, how different Sarah Palin really is from the rest of us in the "United States."

I doubt anyone involved with the AIP has much loyalty to the United States to begin with, why? because their motto is simply "Alaska first, Alaska always." These people do not believe in what the rest of us in America do, they want to separate themselves from this country and become their own nation.

I firmly believe that Sarah Palin was chosen simply to divide the nation more during this election. She was picked because she is not from one of the mainland states, and the rest of us Americans did not know her at all.

According to the Alaskan Independence Party's web site:

"The Alaskan Independence Party's goal is, one choice from among the following four alternatives:

1. Remain a Territory.
2. Become a separate and Independent Nation.
3. Accept Commonwealth status.
4. Become a State.

At least the AIP doesn't try and hide its mission from those of us who still love the United States. I think it's obvious what Mccain & Palin are after. To divide this country even more.

It seems to me that Sarah Palin praises the AIP only for working spiritedly to achieve their goals, one of which (as you cited from Wikipedia, though unfortunately not the best of sources)is "adherence to the founding documents of the United States"--is this not what originally helped to make this great country what it is?

Palin also praises "competition, even in politics." She didn't actually come out and say that she supports the AIP, only that she supports competition.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a McCain/Palin supporter. It's just that I feel that you are doing what nearly EVERY blogger and journalist is onto now: taking soundbites or phrases out of context and manipulating them so as to make a point that isn't really there. If you want to act like a journalist, then please try to follow a standard of dignity and truth.

http://www.akip.org/goals.html

The AIP was started for one purpose, their goal has never changed. Secession of Alaska from the United States. In fact, on their site they refer to it as the "Ultimate Goal."

As for Sarah Palin either supporting or not supporting the AIP, I think attending conventions, and giving speeches at their conventions, in addition to husband being a member would in fact begin to be support.

If you go to a Ku Klux Klan rally, your husband makes donations and is a member of the KKK, and you give speeches and make videos encouraging the Klan to "keep up the good work?" Is that not supporting the Klan?

I understand your concern, but I think in this example, you might be off. This is not a case of a soundbyte going astray, this is decades of supports and involvement with a group known to have an Ultimate Goal of secession from the U.S.

Sarah Palin definitely supports the AIP, and it is merely semantics to argue if she supports their "Ultimate Goal" or not.

It would seem that Sarah Palin herself has made guilt by association fair game. This discussion therefore is also fair game.
